Breeches Role
The term "Breeches Role" refers to a theatrical practice where a female performer plays a male character, typically by wearing male clothing, or "breeches." This practice was common in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in English and Italian opera and theater, where women were often not allowed to perform on stage.
Breeches roles allowed women to showcase their talents while challenging gender norms of the time. Notable examples include characters like Cherubino from Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro and Octavian from Richard Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier. These roles often highlighted themes of love and identity.
