Bougainville Referendum
The Bougainville Referendum was a vote held in November 2019 to determine the political future of the Bougainville Autonomous Region in Papua New Guinea. The referendum allowed the people of Bougainville to choose between greater autonomy or full independence from Papua New Guinea, following a long history of conflict and a peace agreement signed in 2001.
The results showed overwhelming support for independence, with over 97% of voters choosing this option. This referendum was a significant step in the peace process and aimed to address the aspirations of the Bougainville people, reflecting their desire for self-determination and governance.
