Blue Zone
A "Blue Zone" refers to regions of the world where people live significantly longer and healthier lives than average. These areas are characterized by high concentrations of centenarians, individuals who live to be 100 years old or more. The concept was popularized by researcher Dan Buettner, who identified five specific Blue Zones: Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Ikaria in Greece, and Loma Linda in California.
The longevity in Blue Zones is attributed to various lifestyle factors, including a plant-based diet, regular physical activity, strong social connections, and a sense of purpose. Residents often engage in community activities and maintain close relationships with family and friends, contributing to their overall well-being. These insights have inspired health initiatives aimed at promoting longevity and wellness in other parts of the world.
