Biwa
The Biwa is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, resembling a lute. It has a pear-shaped body and typically features four strings, which are played with a plectrum. The instrument is known for its rich, resonant sound and is often used in classical Japanese music, particularly in storytelling performances called Joruri.
Historically, the Biwa has been associated with the Biwa Hōshi, blind musicians who played the instrument while narrating tales from Japanese literature, such as the Tale of the Heike. Today, the Biwa continues to be an important part of Japan's cultural heritage, enjoyed in both traditional and contemporary music settings.
