Biwa Hōshi
Biwa Hōshi are traditional Japanese blind musicians who perform while playing the biwa, a type of lute. They are known for their storytelling, often reciting historical tales and legends, particularly from the Heike Monogatari, an epic about the Genpei War. Their performances combine music, singing, and narration, creating a unique art form that has been passed down through generations.
Historically, Biwa Hōshi were itinerant performers who traveled to various regions, sharing their stories and music with local communities. Their art not only entertained but also served to preserve cultural history and folklore, making them an important part of Japan's rich artistic heritage.
