Joruri
Joruri is a traditional form of Japanese narrative music that combines storytelling with the performance of a shamisen, a three-stringed instrument. Originating in the 16th century, it is characterized by its expressive vocal style and dramatic themes, often drawn from historical events or folklore. The performers, known as joruri narrators, convey emotions and bring characters to life through their singing and instrumental accompaniment.
This art form is closely associated with bunraku, or puppet theater, where the narratives are often performed alongside puppetry. Joruri has played a significant role in Japanese culture, influencing various forms of theater and music, and continues to be appreciated for its rich storytelling and musicality.
