Battle of Arausio
The Battle of Arausio took place in 105 BCE near the town of Arausio, present-day Orange in southern France. This conflict was fought between the Roman Republic and the Cimbri and Teutones, two Germanic tribes. The Romans, led by the consuls Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and Quintus Servilius Caepio, faced a significant defeat, resulting in heavy casualties for the Roman forces.
The battle is notable for its impact on Roman military reforms and the eventual rise of military leaders like Gaius Marius. Following the defeat, the Roman Senate recognized the need for changes in their military strategy and organization to better confront external threats.
