Battle of Covadonga
The Battle of Covadonga took place in 722 AD in the northern region of Spain. It was a significant conflict between the Christian forces led by Pelayo and the Muslim army during the early stages of the Reconquista, a period aimed at reclaiming the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. The battle is often considered the starting point of the Christian resistance against Muslim expansion in the region.
The battle occurred in the rugged terrain of the Picos de Europa mountains, where Pelayo's smaller forces successfully ambushed the larger Muslim army. This victory inspired further Christian efforts to reclaim territory, marking a pivotal moment in Spanish history and contributing to the eventual establishment of the Kingdom of Asturias.
