Basaltic Lava
Basaltic lava is a type of lava that is low in viscosity, meaning it flows easily. It is primarily composed of silica, along with iron and magnesium. This composition gives basaltic lava a dark color and allows it to spread over large areas, forming basalt rock when it cools.
Basaltic lava is commonly found in shield volcanoes, such as those in the Hawaiian Islands. These volcanoes produce gentle eruptions, resulting in broad, shield-like shapes. The fluid nature of basaltic lava contributes to the formation of extensive lava flows and unique geological features like pahoehoe and aa textures.
