Baptist War
The Baptist War, also known as the Baptist Rebellion, was a significant slave uprising that occurred in Jamaica in 1831-1832. It was led by a Baptist minister named Samuel Sharpe, who sought to improve the conditions of enslaved people. The rebellion began on Christmas Day and quickly spread across the island, involving thousands of enslaved individuals who demanded freedom and better treatment.
The British colonial government responded with force, leading to violent clashes. The rebellion was eventually suppressed, resulting in the deaths of many participants and the execution of Sharpe. The Baptist War highlighted the growing tensions surrounding slavery, contributing to the eventual abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1833.
