Apical Bud
The apical bud is the growing tip of a plant shoot, located at the top of the stem. It contains actively dividing cells that contribute to the plant's vertical growth. The apical bud is responsible for producing new leaves and flowers, allowing the plant to expand and develop.
In addition to growth, the apical bud plays a crucial role in apical dominance, a phenomenon where the main stem inhibits the growth of lateral buds. This ensures that the plant focuses its energy on growing taller rather than spreading out, which is important for competing for sunlight and resources.
