Antipope Benedict XIII
Antipope Benedict XIII, born Pedro de Luna in 1328, was a Spanish cleric who claimed the papacy from 1394 to 1423 during the Western Schism. He was elected by a faction of cardinals loyal to the Avignon papacy, which was in conflict with the Roman papacy led by Pope Boniface IX. His reign was marked by attempts to unify the church but ultimately resulted in further division.
Benedict XIII was known for his strong personality and efforts to maintain his authority despite opposition. He was eventually declared an antipope by the Council of Constance in 1417, which sought to resolve the schism and restore a single papal authority.
