Amoebic Meningitis
Amoebic meningitis, also known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), is a rare but serious brain infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. This organism typically lives in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and hot springs. Infection occurs when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, often during swimming or diving.
Once the amoeba reaches the brain, it can cause severe inflammation and damage, leading to symptoms like headache, fever, nausea, and confusion. The condition progresses rapidly and is often fatal if not treated promptly. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes.
