Amoebic Encephalitis
Amoebic encephalitis is a rare but serious brain infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. This organism is typically found in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and hot springs. Infection usually occurs when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, often during swimming or diving.
Once the amoeba reaches the brain, it can cause severe inflammation and damage, leading to symptoms like headache, fever, nausea, and confusion. The condition progresses rapidly and can be fatal within days. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, but the overall prognosis remains poor, with very few survivors.
