Amarna Period
The Amarna Period refers to a unique era in ancient Egyptian history during the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten (circa 1353-1336 BCE). This period is characterized by significant religious and artistic changes, particularly the worship of the sun disk, Aten, as the central deity. Akhenaten moved the capital from Thebes to a new city called Akhetaten, now known as Amarna, where he promoted this monotheistic belief.
Art from the Amarna Period is distinct, featuring more naturalistic and expressive styles compared to previous Egyptian art. The period also saw the rise of Nefertiti, Akhenaten's queen, who played a prominent role in the new religious practices. After Akhenaten's death, traditional polytheistic beliefs were restored, marking the end of the Amarna Period.
