Altun Ha
Altun Ha is an ancient Mayan city located in Belize, about 31 miles north of the capital, Belmopan. It was a significant ceremonial center from 200 BC to 900 AD and is known for its impressive temples and plazas. The site covers approximately 5 square miles and features over 500 structures, with the largest pyramid, known as Temple A-1, rising about 54 feet high.
The name "Altun Ha" means "Rockstone Water" in the Mayan language. Archaeologists discovered a large jade head of the sun god K'inich Ahau at the site, which is one of the most famous artifacts from the ancient city. Today, Altun Ha is a popular tourist destination, offering insights into the rich history of the Mayan civilization.
