Alaska Volcano Observatory
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a collaborative program that monitors volcanic activity in Alaska. Established in 1988, it is a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. AVO provides real-time data and research on volcanic eruptions, helping to ensure public safety and inform aviation operations.
AVO uses a variety of tools, including satellite imagery, seismic monitoring, and field observations, to track volcanic activity. The observatory also educates the public about the hazards associated with volcanoes and shares information through reports and online resources.
