Al-Nuri Mosque
The Al-Nuri Mosque is a historic mosque located in Mosul, Iraq. It was originally built in the 12th century and is known for its distinctive minaret, called the al-Hadba, which means "the hunchback" due to its leaning structure. The mosque served as a significant religious and cultural center for the local community.
In June 2014, the mosque gained international attention when it was destroyed by the Islamic State during their occupation of Mosul. The destruction of the Al-Nuri Mosque symbolized the loss of cultural heritage in the region. Efforts are underway to restore the mosque and its minaret as part of the city's rebuilding process.
