Agave tequilana
Agave tequilana, commonly known as blue agave, is a succulent plant native to Mexico. It is primarily cultivated in the region surrounding the city of Tequila, where it thrives in the volcanic soil and warm climate. The plant can grow up to 2 meters tall and has long, spiky leaves that form a rosette shape.
The blue agave is best known for its role in producing tequila, a popular distilled alcoholic beverage. The heart of the plant, called the piña, is harvested and cooked to convert its starches into sugars, which are then fermented and distilled to create tequila.
