African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde
The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) is a political party founded in 1956. It aimed to achieve independence for the African territories of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde from Portuguese colonial rule. The party played a significant role in the liberation struggle, leading to Guinea-Bissau's independence in 1973 and Cape Verde's in 1975.
PAIGC was initially led by Amílcar Cabral, a prominent revolutionary figure. After independence, the party became the ruling party in both countries, promoting socialist policies and national development. The PAIGC remains influential in the political landscape of Guinea-Bissau today.
