Acetazolamide
Acetazolamide is a medication primarily used to treat conditions like glaucoma, altitude sickness, and certain types of seizures. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase, which helps regulate fluid balance in the body. By reducing the production of fluid in the eye, it lowers intraocular pressure, making it beneficial for patients with glaucoma.
Additionally, Acetazolamide can help prevent symptoms of altitude sickness by promoting the excretion of bicarbonate in the urine, which helps the body acclimatize to high altitudes. It is usually taken in tablet form and may cause side effects such as tingling sensations, increased urination, or gastrointestinal issues.
