A.Q. Khan
A.Q. Khan, or Abdul Qadeer Khan, is a Pakistani nuclear scientist known for his pivotal role in developing Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. Born on April 1, 1936, in Bhopal, India, he later moved to Pakistan after the partition in 1947. Khan studied in Europe and gained expertise in metallurgy, which he applied to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons.
In 1998, Pakistan conducted its first successful nuclear tests, making it the seventh nation to possess nuclear weapons. Khan's contributions to the program made him a national hero in Pakistan, but he later faced controversy due to allegations of nuclear proliferation to countries like Iran and North Korea.
