54th Massachusetts
The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of the first African American units in the United States during the American Civil War. Formed in 1863, it played a crucial role in challenging the prevailing racial stereotypes of the time and demonstrated the bravery and capability of Black soldiers.
Led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the regiment is best known for its courageous assault on Fort Wagner in July 1863. Despite suffering heavy casualties, the 54th's actions helped pave the way for the enlistment of more African American troops and contributed to the eventual Union victory.
