54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of the first African American regiments in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Formed in 1863, it was led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and played a significant role in challenging racial stereotypes in the military.
The regiment is best known for its courageous assault on Fort Wagner in July 1863, where they faced heavy casualties. Despite the loss, their bravery helped pave the way for the acceptance of African American soldiers in the military and highlighted their contributions to the war effort.
