Colonel Robert Gould Shaw
Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was a Union officer during the American Civil War, best known for leading the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units in the war. Born on October 10, 1837, in Boston, Massachusetts, Shaw came from a prominent abolitionist family, which influenced his commitment to the fight against slavery.
