法然
法然 (Hōnen) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who lived during the late Heian period (1133-1212). He is best known for founding the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, which emphasizes devotion to 阿弥陀仏 (Amitābha Buddha) as a means to achieve enlightenment and rebirth in the Pure Land. Hōnen taught that even those with little merit could attain salvation through sincere recitation of the nembutsu, or the name of Amitābha.
Hōnen's teachings were revolutionary, as they made Buddhist practice accessible to the common people. His ideas were compiled in the work 選択本願念仏集 (Senchaku Hongan Nembutsu Shū), which outlines the importance of faith and devotion over complex rituals. Hōnen's influence led to the growth of Pure Land Buddhism in Japan, shaping the spiritual landscape for centuries to come.
