刀狩
刀狩 (Katana-gari) was a policy implemented in Japan during the early Edo period, specifically in 1588 under the rule of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This policy aimed to disarm the peasantry and prevent uprisings by prohibiting the possession of swords and other weapons by common people. Only samurai and certain officials were allowed to carry weapons, which helped to consolidate power and maintain social order.
The enforcement of 刀狩 led to significant changes in Japanese society. It reduced the potential for rebellion and violence among the lower classes, while reinforcing the status of the samurai class as the ruling elite. This policy played a crucial role in shaping the peaceful conditions of the Edo period, which lasted for over 250 years.
