{Regent for James VI
The term "Regent for James VI" refers to the individual who governed Scotland on behalf of James VI during his minority. James VI became king at just 13 months old after the death of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots. As he was too young to rule, a regent was appointed to manage the affairs of the kingdom until he came of age.
The first regent was Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox, who served from 1567 until his assassination in 1571. Following him, James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton took over as regent, navigating the political challenges of the time, including conflicts between Protestant and Catholic factions in Scotland.
