Regent for James VI
The term "Regent for James VI" refers to the individual who governed Scotland on behalf of James VI during his minority. After the death of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1587, James became king at just 13 months old. To manage the kingdom until he reached maturity, a regent was appointed.
The first regent was Moray, James's half-brother, who ruled from 1567 until his assassination in 1570. Following him, several regents took charge, including Murray and Morton, each navigating the political challenges of the time, including conflicts between Protestant and Catholic factions.
