The yellow-eyed penguin, also known as Hoiho, is a unique species native to New Zealand. It is easily recognized by its distinctive yellow eyes and the yellow band that runs from its eyes around the back of its head. These penguins are medium-sized, standing about 65 cm tall, and are known for their shy and solitary behavior. Yellow-eyed penguins primarily inhabit coastal forests and grasslands, where they nest in burrows. They are excellent swimmers, using their wings to propel themselves underwater while hunting for fish and squid. Unfortunately, their population is declining due to habitat loss and introduced predators.
