Hoiho
Hoiho, also known as the yellow-eyed penguin, is a unique species native to New Zealand. It is recognized for its distinctive yellow eyes and the yellow band that runs from its eyes around the back of its head. Hoiho are medium-sized penguins, typically standing about 65 cm tall and weighing between 3 to 6 kg. They primarily inhabit the forests and coastal areas of the South Island and the sub-Antarctic islands.
These penguins are known for their solitary nature, often nesting in dense vegetation. Hoiho primarily feed on small fish and squid, which they catch while swimming. Unfortunately, they are classified as endangered due to habitat loss, introduced predators, and human activities, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.
