The white rhino is one of the largest species of rhinoceros, known for its broad mouth that helps it graze on grass. Found mainly in the savannas and grasslands of Africa, this majestic animal can weigh up to 2,300 kilograms (5,000 pounds). There are two subspecies: the southern white rhino and the critically endangered northern white rhino.
Despite its name, the white rhino is not actually white; the name comes from the Dutch word "wijde," meaning "wide," referring to its mouth. These gentle giants play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to maintain the grasslands, which benefits other wildlife in their habitat.
