ventriculostomy
Ventriculostomy is a medical procedure that involves creating an opening in one of the brain's ventricles, which are fluid-filled spaces. This procedure is often performed to relieve pressure caused by conditions such as hydrocephalus or traumatic brain injury. A small tube, called a catheter, is inserted through the opening to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and help maintain normal pressure within the skull.
The procedure is typically done under anesthesia and can be performed using minimally invasive techniques. Monitoring the drainage of CSF allows healthcare providers to manage intracranial pressure effectively and prevent complications related to fluid buildup in the brain.
