transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a temporary period of symptoms similar to those of a stroke. TIAs occur when there is a temporary decrease in blood flow to a part of the brain, often due to a blood clot. Symptoms can include sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking, but they typically resolve within a few minutes to hours.
Although TIAs do not cause permanent damage, they are serious warning signs. They indicate an increased risk of a future stroke, making it essential for individuals experiencing TIA symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and discuss prevention strategies with their healthcare provider.
