toga virilis
The "toga virilis" was a garment worn in ancient Rome that symbolized a young man's transition to adulthood. Typically made of wool, it was a plain white toga that signified the wearer had reached the age of maturity, usually around 14 to 16 years old. This ceremony marked a significant rite of passage in Roman society.
The toga virilis replaced the toga praetexta, which was worn by boys and magistrates. The act of donning the toga virilis often occurred during a formal ceremony, where the young man would be recognized as a full citizen, gaining the rights and responsibilities that came with adulthood in Roman culture.
