temporomandibular joint
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull, allowing for movements such as opening and closing the mouth. It is located on both sides of the head, just in front of the ears, and plays a crucial role in activities like chewing, speaking, and yawning.
The TMJ consists of several components, including the articular disc, which acts as a cushion between the bones, and ligaments that provide stability. Disorders of the TMJ can lead to pain, discomfort, and difficulty in jaw movement, often referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
