superior rectus
The superior rectus is one of the six extraocular muscles responsible for eye movement. It is located at the top of the eye and primarily functions to elevate the eye, allowing it to look upward. This muscle is innervated by the oculomotor nerve, which is crucial for its movement.
In addition to elevation, the superior rectus also assists in adduction and intorsion of the eye. Adduction refers to the movement of the eye toward the nose, while intorsion involves rotating the top of the eye toward the nose. Proper functioning of this muscle is essential for coordinated eye movements.
