Lateral Rectus
The lateral rectus is one of the six extraocular muscles responsible for eye movement. It is located on the outer side of each eye and primarily functions to move the eye outward, away from the nose. This muscle is crucial for lateral gaze, allowing individuals to look to the side.
The lateral rectus is controlled by the abducens nerve (cranial nerve VI). Dysfunction or weakness in this muscle can lead to conditions such as strabismus, where the eyes do not properly align, affecting vision and depth perception. Proper functioning of the lateral rectus is essential for coordinated eye movements.
