supergiant
A supergiant is a type of star that is much larger and more luminous than the Sun. These stars have a mass at least 10 times greater than that of the Sun and can be hundreds to thousands of times larger in volume. Supergiants are typically found in the later stages of stellar evolution, where they have exhausted the hydrogen in their cores and expanded significantly.
Supergiants can be classified into two main categories: red supergiants and blue supergiants. Red supergiants, like Betelgeuse, are cooler and emit a reddish light, while blue supergiants, such as Rigel, are hotter and appear blue. These stars have relatively short lifespans, often only a few million years, before they end their lives in spectacular explosions known as supernovae.
