The term "shō" refers to a traditional Japanese mouth organ, also known as a free reed instrument. It is made up of a series of bamboo pipes, each containing a metal reed. When a player blows air into the instrument, the reeds vibrate, producing sound. The shō is often used in Gagaku, which is Japan's ancient court music.

The instrument is known for its unique ability to create harmonious chords, making it an essential part of various traditional performances.
