secondary aldosteronism
Secondary aldosteronism is a condition where the body produces excess aldosterone, a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure and fluid balance. This overproduction is usually triggered by an underlying issue, such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or renal artery stenosis, which causes the body to retain sodium and water, leading to increased blood volume and pressure.
In contrast to primary aldosteronism, where the adrenal glands produce too much aldosterone independently, secondary aldosteronism is a response to other health problems. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, which may involve medications, lifestyle changes, or surgical interventions.
