native Hawaiian government
The native Hawaiian government refers to the political structures and systems that were established by the indigenous people of Hawaii before the arrival of Western influence. Traditionally, this government was organized under a system of chiefs, known as aliʻi, who ruled over various islands and regions. The governance was deeply connected to the land and the spiritual beliefs of the native Hawaiian people.
In the 19th century, the native Hawaiian government was formalized with the establishment of the Kingdom of Hawaii. This monarchy lasted until the late 1800s when it was overthrown, leading to the annexation of Hawaii by the United States. Today, efforts continue to restore and recognize the rights of native Hawaiians through various organizations and initiatives.
