medial lemniscus
The medial lemniscus is a bundle of nerve fibers located in the brainstem that carries sensory information related to touch, pressure, and proprioception from the body to the brain. It is part of the dorsal column-medial lemniscus pathway, which transmits signals from sensory receptors to the thalamus.
In the medial lemniscus, the fibers originate from the nucleus gracilis and nucleus cuneatus in the medulla oblongata. After crossing over to the opposite side of the brainstem, these fibers ascend to the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus, where they synapse before sending information to the somatosensory cortex for processing.
