Dorsal Column
The dorsal column is a part of the spinal cord that carries sensory information from the body to the brain. It primarily transmits signals related to touch, pressure, and proprioception, which is the sense of body position. This pathway is crucial for our ability to perceive and respond to our environment.
The dorsal column consists of two main tracts: the fasciculus cuneatus and the fasciculus gracilis. These tracts ascend through the spinal cord and synapse in the brainstem before reaching the thalamus, where the information is relayed to the somatosensory cortex for processing.
