ileal conduit
An ileal conduit is a surgical procedure used to create a new pathway for urine to exit the body. It involves taking a small section of the ileum, which is part of the small intestine, and using it to form a tube. This tube is then connected to the ureters, which carry urine from the kidneys, and is brought out through the abdominal wall to create a stoma.
After the procedure, urine drains continuously into a collection bag attached to the stoma. The ileal conduit is often performed for patients who have had their bladder removed due to conditions like cancer or severe injury. It allows for the management of urinary function without a bladder.
