This cartilage is composed of a dense network of collagen fibers and a gel-like matrix, which helps it withstand pressure and reduce friction during movement. In addition to its structural roles, hyaline cartilage plays a crucial part in the growth and development of bones. During childhood, it forms the growth plates that allow bones to lengthen. As a person matures, much of this cartilage is replaced by bone tissue, but some remains to cushion joints and support respiratory structures.
