geiko
A geiko is a traditional female entertainer in Japan, particularly associated with the Kyoto region. They are skilled in various arts, including music, dance, and games, and are often seen wearing elegant kimonos and distinctive hairstyles. Geiko are trained from a young age, often starting as maiko, or apprentice geiko, before becoming fully qualified.
The role of a geiko is to provide entertainment at ochaya, or tea houses, where they engage with guests through performances and conversation. Their training emphasizes grace, poise, and cultural knowledge, making them an important part of Japanese cultural heritage.
