enchondroma
An enchondroma is a type of benign tumor that develops from cartilage tissue, typically found within the bones. These tumors are most commonly located in the small bones of the hands and feet but can also occur in larger bones. Enchondromas usually grow slowly and may not cause any symptoms, often being discovered incidentally during imaging studies for other reasons.
While enchondromas are generally non-cancerous, they can sometimes lead to complications, such as fractures or pain if they grow large enough. In rare cases, they may transform into a malignant tumor called chondrosarcoma. Regular monitoring and, if necessary, surgical removal are common management strategies for symptomatic cases.
