diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma
Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a type of brain tumor that primarily affects children. It is located in the pons, a part of the brainstem that controls vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, and motor skills. DIPG is known for its aggressive nature and is difficult to treat due to its location and the way it infiltrates surrounding brain tissue.
Symptoms of DIPG may include difficulty with balance, changes in eye movement, and problems with speech. Unfortunately, the prognosis for children diagnosed with DIPG is generally poor, with most patients surviving less than two years after diagnosis. Research is ongoing to find more effective treatments for this challenging condition.
