common furniture beetle
The common furniture beetle, scientifically known as Anobium punctatum, is a small wood-boring insect that typically measures about 3 to 5 millimeters in length. It is commonly found in wooden furniture, flooring, and structural timber, where it can cause significant damage. The adult beetles are brown and have a distinctive elongated shape, while their larvae are white and live inside the wood, feeding on cellulose.
These beetles thrive in damp environments and prefer softwoods, such as pine and spruce. Infestations can often go unnoticed until the damage becomes severe, making it important for homeowners to regularly inspect wooden items for signs of these pests, such as tiny exit holes and frass (wood dust).
